The Supreme Court of Ghana

The Supreme Court of Ghana is the highest court in the country. It is the final court of appeal for all matters arising in Ghana. The Constitution of Ghana provides for the court to be made up of the Chief Justice of Ghana and not less than nine other Justices of the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court consists of the chief justice and at least nine other judges. The chief justice is expected to preside at all sittings of the Supreme Court whenever present. The chief justice is the most senior member and oversees the administration of the Court of Appeal.

The Chief Justice

The Chief Justice of Ghana is the head of the judiciary and the most senior judge in the country. The current Chief Justice of Ghana is Gertrude Torkornoo. She was nominated to the Chief Justice position in 2017 by President Nana Akufo-Addo‚ approved by Parliament‚ and sworn into the role by the President Nana Akufo-Addo. She was nominated to the Supreme Court in November 2019 and received parliamentary approval in December 2019. She was sworn in on 17 December 2019. Additionally‚ Sophia Akuffo became one of the first judges for the African Court on Human and Peoples Rights in 2006.

Current Trends in the Ghanaian Judiciary

The Ghanaian judiciary is undergoing a period of significant transformation‚ marked by a growing emphasis on judicial independence‚ accountability‚ and efficiency. The judiciary has seen a significant increase in the number of Judges/Magistrates in the Judiciary over the past 4 years. In 2019‚ the Judiciary recorded a total of 138 females. By 2022/2023 Legal Year‚ this number had appreciated to 218‚ signifying an increase of approximately 58 within the 4 year period. The judiciary is also focusing on enhancing public trust and confidence in the justice system through initiatives such as the establishment of specialized courts‚ the introduction of new technology‚ and the promotion of alternative dispute resolution mechanisms.
