Getting a SIM Card

Getting a SIM card in Kenya is a straightforward process. You can purchase one at the airport, mobile network stores, or other retail outlets. If you want to purchase a SIM card at the airport, you can find shops that sell prepaid SIM cards for tourists at both Nairobi and Mombasa international airports.

When purchasing a SIM card, you will need to show a Kenyan photo ID or passport as all subscribers need to be registered. This process should only take about 5 minutes.

Prepaid SIM Cards for Tourists

Prepaid SIM cards are the most popular option for tourists in Kenya. You can buy one from any of the major mobile network operators, including Safaricom, Airtel Kenya, and Telkom. These cards offer a variety of data and calling plans, making it easy to find the best option for your needs.

Safaricom is the largest and most widely used mobile network operator in Kenya, with extensive coverage throughout the country, including remote areas. They offer a prepaid SIM card for 50 KES, which includes 50 KES airtime that can be used for voice calls or data. Their data bundles range from 1 GB for 1 week at 250 KES to 15 GB for 1 month at 2,000 KES.

Airtel Kenya offers a variety of prepaid SIM card options. You can top up your SIM card at any supermarket, reload store, or local shop. Only one SIM card is allowed per person. The SIM card covers all areas in Kenya, but network speed may vary in remote areas. Internet speed will drop to 14 Mbps after 7 GB of data is used.

Telkom offers several SIM-only plans for tourists, including 2 GB valid for 1 day for KES 100 (0.82 USD) and 2.5 GB valid for 7 days for KES 250 (2.04 USD).

eSIM Options

eSIMs are a convenient alternative to traditional SIM cards, especially for tourists. They offer several advantages, including immediate internet access upon arrival in Kenya, no need to negotiate with SIM card sellers at the airport, transparent and fair pricing, and the possibility of online extension.

Airalo is a popular eSIM provider that offers data-only plans for Kenya. Their plans range from 1 GB for 7 days at 9 USD to 5 GB for 30 days at 36.50 USD. These eSIMs are only valid in Kenya.

Safaricom also offers eSIMs, which can be purchased at their official shops. You can also get a Safaricom eSIM at the JKIA airport, where there is a 24-hour Safaricom outlet outside T1A.

If you prefer to use a physical SIM card, you can purchase one from Safaricom at their shops or from accredited dealers. You can also buy a SIM card from any M-PESA agent for as little as 50 KES (about 0.50 USD).

Registration and Requirements

To use M-Pesa, you will need a Safaricom SIM card. You can register for M-Pesa when you purchase your SIM card. You can also register for M-Pesa at any Safaricom shop or accredited dealer.

Once you have registered for M-Pesa, you can use it to send and receive money, pay bills, buy airtime, and even withdraw cash. You can also use M-Pesa to make payments at many businesses in Kenya.

M-Pesa is a very useful service for tourists in Kenya. It can make it easier to manage your finances, especially when traveling to remote areas where banks and ATMs are not readily available.

It's important to note that you can ONLY use MPESA if you have a Safaricom SIM card.
