The Tax Identification Number (TIN) is a unique ten-digit identifying number allocated by the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) to prospective Taxpayers to enable them to meet their tax obligations. It is a crucial requirement for any individual or entity operating in Uganda, ensuring that all tax-related transactions are properly tracked and managed. The URA utilizes the TIN for tax administration purposes, facilitating the efficient collection and management of tax revenues.

Eligibility for TIN Registration
In Uganda, every person or entity liable to pay tax under the tax law is considered a taxpayer and is required to obtain a TIN. This includes individuals, businesses, and organizations operating within the country.
Individuals who are employed or involved in any income-producing activity where income tax, VAT, or other taxes are due must have a TIN.
Additionally, anyone involved in the registration or transfer of a motor vehicle is required to have a TIN. The URA mandates TIN possession for land transactions valued at UGX 10 million or more, and for companies, the requirement extends to all land transactions regardless of the amount.
The TIN Registration Process
The TIN registration process can be completed online or offline. For online registration, individuals can access the URA website and fill out the instant TIN application form. This process requires providing personal information, including the National Identification Number (NIN) as indicated on the National ID.
For Non-individuals, the Business Registration Number (BRN) is required, which is found on the certificate of Registration/Incorporation.
If online registration is not feasible, individuals can opt for the offline method by downloading the TIN registration form, filling it out, and submitting it to the URA. The URA aims to notify applicants of their TIN or decision on their registration application within 21 working days after inspection.
