Physical Characteristics and Identification

The Timneh African Grey Parrot is smaller than its Congo African Grey counterpart, measuring approximately 10 inches (26 cm) in length and weighing around 300 grams. Their plumage is a distinctive dark charcoal gray, with a pinkish or horn-colored upper mandible (beak) and a dark maroon colored tail. These features help distinguish them from the Congo African Grey, which has a black beak and red tail feathers. The Timneh African Grey's smaller size and unique coloration make them easily identifiable within the African Grey Parrot species.

Habitat and Conservation Status

The Timneh African Grey Parrot's natural habitat is the continent of Africa, specifically in parts of Côte dIvoire, Guinea, the islands off the coast of Guinea-Bissau, and most of Liberia and Sierra Leone. They are primarily found in dense tropical forests, making them relatively elusive. However, they can also be spotted at forest edges, savannahs dotted with trees, and even occasionally closer to human civilization. Unfortunately, the IUCN Red List classifies the Timneh African Grey as an Endangered species due to heavy pressure on their population from habitat loss and, despite its illegality, trapping for the pet trade. Their numbers are believed to be on a heavy decline.

Behavior and Temperament

Timneh African Greys are highly intelligent birds with an exceptional capacity for continuous learning throughout their lives. While they are typically shy and introverted as adults, they often form strong bonds with a single person and may be more distant towards others. These parrots are known for being highly routine-oriented and observant of their surroundings. They can react negatively to even minor changes in their environment, such as rearranging toys in their cage. It's crucial to desensitize your Timneh African Grey to new things to prevent unnecessary stress. As empathetic and emotional creatures, they possess unique personalities, but it's important to remember that they can also be very demanding of their owners' time and attention.

Care and Housing

Providing a spacious enclosure for your Timneh African Grey is essential. A suspended cage or aviary is ideal, with a minimum length of no less than 9.8 feet (3 meters). The spacing between the cage bars should be approximately 2 cm. Your African Grey will appreciate it if the cage has some horizontal bars, as parrots love to climb. The cage's location also matters⁚ you should place it in a social but not overly hectic part of the house. Keep it away from direct sunlight, draughts, heating vents, or air conditioning ducts. Inside the cage, a variety of perches of different sizes and materials should be available, including specialized perches for beak and nail trimming, as well as popular options like Java multi-branches. Straight plastic or dowel perches are not suitable, as they can cause deformities in your parrot's feet over time. Go for natural wood!
