Location and History

The Nsawam Medium Security Prison is situated in the Eastern Region of Ghana, approximately forty kilometers outside the capital city of Accra. Established in 1960, it received its first inmates on October 10th of the same year. Nsawam is a town in south Ghana and is the capital of the Nsawam-Adoagyire Municipal District. The main ethnic group in the area is Akan, followed by Ga and Ewe. Nsawam is controlled by the Nsawam-Adoagyire Municipal District (ASMD).

Prison Capacity and Overcrowding

The Nsawam Medium Security Prison was initially built to accommodate a maximum of 850 inmates. However, it currently houses a staggering 3,187 prisoners, according to reports from 2023. This severe overcrowding is a persistent issue within the Ghanaian prison system, highlighting a dire need for reform and expansion of prison facilities to ensure humane conditions for inmates.

Life Inside Nsawam Prison

Life within the Nsawam Medium Security Prison is characterized by harsh realities. Overcrowding leads to cramped living conditions, limited access to basic amenities, and a lack of adequate sanitation. Inmates often face challenges with access to healthcare, education, and rehabilitation programs, further exacerbating the difficulties they encounter while serving their sentences.

Nsawam, the town where the prison is located, serves as the capital of the Nsawam-Adoagyire Municipal District. It's a bustling hub with a population of around 44,522 people, primarily belonging to the Akan ethnic group. The town's economy relies heavily on commercial activities, particularly the marketing of bread and pastries, due to its strategic location on the main highway connecting Accra to the northern part of Ghana.
