Lake of Egypt is a hidden gem nestled in Southern Illinois, just south of Marion․ Here, you'll find a secluded expanse of water spanning 93 miles of wooded bays and inlets․ This is a gorgeous spot with deep water, excellent nippy fish, and beautiful houses to gawk at as you cruise the area․ However, as we were visitors with kayaks, we found the lake pretty crowded with boats and obnoxious jet skiers who were not always conscientious of swimmers and other watercraft․

Lake of Egypt is a reservoir in the Little Egypt region of the U․S․ state of Illinois․ It is located six miles (10 km) south of Marion, Illinois and covers 2,300 acres (9 km) with 90 miles (140 km) of shoreline․ The lake has an average depth of 18 feet (5․5 m) with a maximum depth of 52 feet (16 m)․ The southeast side of the Lake of Egypt is surrounded by Shawnee National Forest and open to primitive camping in the general forest area․ Lake of Egypt is surrounded by residential development with several public access points including a boat ramp at the Shawnee National Forest campground on the shore of the lake․ The Shawnee National Forest spans across parts of southern Illinois and includes trails for hiking and horseback riding along with places to hunt and rock climb․ Southern Illinois Power Cooperative is located on the shores of Lake of Egypt, a 2300 acre lake with 93 miles of shoreline developed by SIPC for cooling water․ The lake has an average depth of 18 feet (5․5 m) with a maximum depth of 52 feet (15․8 m)․
