Requirements for South African Citizenship
The South African Citizenship Act, 1995 (Act 88 of 1995) was amended by the South African Citizenship Amendment Act, 2010 (Act No. 17 of 2010) which came into operation on 1 January 2013. It brought in updated requirements for applications around Citizenship. The acquisition, loss, deprivation and resumption of South African citizenship are regulated by the South African Citizenship Act, 1995 (Act 88 of 1995), hereinafter referred to as the Act, and the Regulations issued in terms of the Act. Citizenship by Birth, Descent, and Naturalization
South African citizenship can be acquired through birth, descent (adoption) or naturalisation. Having obtained South African citizenship, one can also lose, renounce or be deprived of same. This requires a clear understanding of the laws pertaining to South African citizenship. Any person born to at least one South African parent receives citizenship at birth. Children born to a legal resident of the country are permitted to South African citizenship only when they reach the age of majority. Dual Citizenship in South Africa
