It is related to the Cape buffalo (Syncerus caffer caffer), the Sudan buffalo (Syncerus caffer brachyceros), and the Nile buffalo (Syncerus caffer caffer). This unique subspecies is a vital part of the ecosystem in West and Central Africa, but unfortunately, it is facing an uncertain future due to a number of threats.

The African forest buffalo is distinguished from its savanna counterparts by its smaller size and shorter, straighter horns. While Cape buffalos can weigh up to 705 lbs, the forest buffalo typically weighs between 550-705 lbs. These adaptations allow them to navigate the dense, humid forests of their habitat with ease. They are also known for their reddish-brown coat, which helps them blend in with the undergrowth. This unique subspecies plays a vital role in the forest ecosystem, contributing to seed dispersal and nutrient cycling.
